Why do children need Chiropractic Care?
With children, the most rapid period of brain growth and development occurs during the first 2 years of life. For normal healthy development of the brain, we rely on sensory input. A significant amount of this input comes from joint receptors in the spine, through normal spinal motion. However, very slight misalignments (subluxations) in the spine prevent normal spinal motion, and inhibit this vital sensory input. Therefore, optimal neurological development may be hindered. Subluxations also affect the nerves of the spine, which then decreases our body’s ability to function normally. Although symptoms of pain and malfunction may not show up for years, reduced nerve function can have a huge impact on a child’s health.

When should children see a Chiropractor?
We advise that children be checked for vertebral subluxations soon after birth because of the potential damaging effects of the birth process itself. Even the most natural births are somewhat traumatic to the infant and may cause "hidden damage". Studies show that many children who experience symptoms of colic, ear-infections and asthma have vertebral subluxations which impair their nervous system function. Other signs that a child may have subluxations include difficulties with breastfeeding, poor sleep, constipation, irritability, hyperactivity, bedwetting, and headaches. In many cases, there are no obvious signs of nerve dysfunction. Early detection and correction can prevent layers of damage from occurring in the child's vital nervous system. It is also important to have children checked while their spine grows and develops, especially when they first support their head, first sit, first stand, and first walk. Children should also be checked after falls, bumps, and when involved with sports. A regular schedule of wellness care is beneficial for all children.

Do chiropractic adjustments hurt?
Chiropractic adjustments should never hurt. To the contrary, most people report an immediate relaxation response, and improved feelings of well-being. Chiropractors who have a special interest in the care of children use very specific, gentle techniques. On the very young, the adjustment is as light as a finger touch. Chiropractors who are members of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association have completed post-graduate studies on specific techniques for pregnant mothers, infants and children to enhance their skills in this field.
