Chronic Pain Management
Chiropractic. No matter that we talk about scoliosis and causes and possible treatments, regardless of treatment directed at the condition, It’s about restoring function and total health to your nervous system. Overall spinal health helps people experience amazing improvements with their health and wellness through the use of consistent chiropractic care. Not just improving backs, but all aspects of body and wellness.
What is Scoliosis?
There are 24 bones that make up your spine called vertebra. These bones protect the central nervous system and stack up like a ladder to create spinal column. Your spine is naturally curved when looking at it from the side with that little curve out from the neck that includes 7 bones in the cervical region, the 12 vertebra that curve inward in the thoracic region and the bones in the lower back which form the natural curve. However, from the side the spine should appear straight, but when there is a curvature or twist of more than 10% it is referred to as scoliosis (scolio from Greek meaning 'crooked'). In spite of spine curvature, the muscles, ligaments and discs appear to remain normal, however this can change if the condition worsens.
In most cases scoliosis is diagnosed in adolescents around the period of beginning to experience growth spurts but before puberty. The cause of scoliosis is unknown at this point and evidence of any type of cure in non-existent. There are exceptions that some causes of scoliosis can be directly related to conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. Contrary to previous beliefs, poor posture and abnormal stresses on the back do not cause the condition.
What are the treatment options?
Specific treatment options include bracing, which can cause some discomfort, and it is difficult to send kids to school with this cumbersome brace; casting which is a full time treatment as it is applied usually under general anesthesia and can be uncomfortable, but does help with conformity; traction, for non candidates of bracing, but can be difficult if there are any other health issues affecting the patient like breathing or weakness; spinal fusion and growth rods, for more severe curves, usually over 40%; chiropractic involving spinal nerve health and manipulation.
Our chiropractic approach to Scoliosis
Over the years there have been approaches to curing or partially correcting scoliosis with little or no effect. Bracing, casts and electrical stimulation, to name a few, are some of the ways curvature has been treated. While being basically ineffective, (there has been some success to be fair), they have also been known to be emotionally scarring. Doctors of Chiropractic do not tend to treat disease and conditions, but rather treat subluxation complex. When the body is in alignment and the nervous system is functioning correctly, there is a much better chance of resisting abnormalities, scoliosis included. Evidence of improvement from chiropractic treatment comes from many sources over the years: Fed Barge D.C. gave several cases of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis that had significant improvement with chiropractic care and specifically stated "traditional chiropractic concepts and techniques..have shown decent clinical results in scoliosis control, reduction and correction.*1 .
